Lesbian couple enjoy New York's first same sex marriage as Niagara turns rainbow

Kitty Lambert, 54, and Cheryle Rudd, 53, from Buffalo, New York became the first same sex couple to get married in New York just after midnight on Saturday at Niagara Falls state park near the US-Canada border.

The women, both mothers from previous marriages, were joined by hundreds of friends, family and onlookers for the first gay marriage since New York became the sixth, and largest, US state to legalise same sex nuptials.

At the same time, the falls were lit up with rainbow-coloured lights in a shimmering homage to the momentous occasion. Before the wedding, Lambert said: ‘We’re achieving that real American dream to be treated like everybody else and be protected under all those laws.’

The women danced on stage after being married to Lady Gaga’s The Edge of Glory. Kitty and Cheryle will be joined by over 40 other gay couples who will get married at the waterfall today.
